Iran's Firm Nuclear Stance: Materials Stay, Talks on Hold
In a recent statement reported by Iranian official media, a top security official outlined a clear and uncompromising position regarding the country's nuclear program. The central message is unequivocal: no enriched nuclear material will be permitted to leave Iranian territory.
Nuclear Materials as Domestic Assets
Mohsen Rezaei, the Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council and representative of the Supreme Leader, articulated this principle during a meeting with Pakistan's Army Chief. He stated that all of Iran's enriched nuclear materials would remain inside the country, describing them as "important assets of the Iranian people and national wealth."
This declaration underscores two critical points:
- Sovereign Control: Iran maintains ultimate authority over the disposition of its nuclear materials.
- Asset Classification: The materials are framed as national wealth, intended for domestic application rather than being subject to external bargaining.
A Unified Precondition for Negotiations: U.S. Must Build Trust First
Addressing the prospect of nuclear negotiations, Rezaei presented a unified domestic front. He asserted that the Iranian people and officials are aligned in their stance.
The core precondition for any future dialogue is explicit: no negotiations will take place until the United States takes steps to build trust. This process, he indicated, must begin with Washington meeting Iran's specified conditions. This framing effectively places the onus for resuming talks on the U.S., establishing a concrete prerequisite that must be fulfilled first.
