IREN Q1 Earnings: AI Cloud Drives Growth Amid Strategic Shift
IREN, formerly a bitcoin miner now transitioning to AI cloud computing, has released its latest quarterly financial results. The company reported total revenue of $228 million, marking a 66% sequential increase. The standout performer was its AI cloud division.
Revenue Mix Transformation: AI Cloud Takes Center Stage
AI cloud revenue surged to $200 million this quarter, representing a staggering 182% growth from the previous period. This high-margin segment achieved an 86% gross profit margin. In contrast, bitcoin mining revenue declined sharply from $67 million to $28 million quarter-over-quarter. This shift highlights IREN's successful pivot from cryptocurrency mining to high-value AI infrastructure services.
Financial Performance and Forward Guidance
While the company reported a net loss of $263 million, its adjusted EBITDA of $66 million indicates improving operational fundamentals.
Daniel Roberts, IREN's Co-founder and Co-CEO, noted that the company's $4 billion-plus Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) target is fully contracted and funded. However, due to client-requested design changes and supplier timeline adjustments, the achievement of this target has been postponed from late 2026 to January 2027.
Infrastructure Edge and New Contracts
Following the quarter's end, IREN secured significant new business:
- A five-year contract valued at approximately $22 million per megawatt, with clients prepaying 90% of GPU capital expenditures
- A short-term contract worth $40 million per megawatt
These agreements strengthen IREN's position in the competitive AI cloud market. The company's infrastructure assets—including over 30,000 acres of land, more than 5GW of secured power, and a 35GW development pipeline—provide a solid foundation for future expansion.
The quarterly report demonstrates IREN's accelerating transformation. The AI cloud business has become not only its primary revenue driver but also a source of substantial profitability. As global demand for AI infrastructure continues to grow, this strategic pivot positions IREN for potentially significant long-term growth.
