Korean Stock Market Introduces Extended Evening Trading Hours

The Korean Exchange has announced a significant operational change: starting September 14, trading hours for the country's primary stock markets will be substantially extended. While the regular trading session remains unchanged, a new post-market continuous trading window will allow transactions as late as 8 p.m.

How the New Trading Session Works

According to the official schedule, the market will operate as follows:

  • Regular Trading: 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (unchanged)
  • Post-Market Closing Price Trading: 3:40 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (executed at closing price only)
  • New Post-Market Continuous Trading: 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (continuous bidding mechanism)

The new evening session is not merely an extended hours window. It employs a continuous auction system similar to the regular session, allowing trades at varying price points while maintaining the daily price fluctuation limit of ±30%.

Markets Affected by the Change

The extended hours apply to Korea's two primary equity markets:

  • KOSPI Market: Constituents of the Korea Composite Stock Price Index
  • KOSDAQ Market:Stocks listed on the Korean growth board

Most domestic listed companies will be included in the new trading schedule, offering investors broader access during extended hours.

Implications for Investors

The extension addresses growing demand for global market connectivity. International investors can now participate in the Korean market during their local trading hours, overcoming time zone barriers. Domestic investors gain flexibility to react to after-hours corporate announcements or economic data.

This move is expected to boost overall market liquidity, particularly during afternoon hours overlapping with European and American trading sessions. Investors should prepare for longer market monitoring periods and adjust their strategies accordingly.
