Lido Initiates Major $16.5B Staking Migration in Landshake Network Overhaul
Lido, a leading liquid staking protocol, has commenced a significant network upgrade. The centerpiece of this move is the migration of a massive stake—over 8 million stETH tokens valued at approximately $16.5 billion—to a new validator architecture designed for Ethereum's future Pectra upgrade.
Streamlining the Validator Set for Enhanced Efficiency
A key outcome of this migration will be a substantial reduction in the number of active validators. Lido estimates its total validator count will drop by roughly one-third post-upgrade. This isn't merely a cutback but a strategic optimization.
The change is projected to decrease the number of attestation messages the network needs to process each epoch by about 29%. This should meaningfully reduce the load on Ethereum's consensus layer, potentially improving its operational efficiency. It's important to note that this optimization targets the blockchain's consensus mechanism and is not expected to directly affect user-level transaction fees (Gas) or confirmation speeds.
A New Era for Node Operators: Introducing ETH Collateral
Beyond the structural shift, the upgrade introduces a pivotal change in how node operators are governed. All 34 professional node operators are being transitioned to a new framework called "Curated Module v2."
The most significant new requirement is that these operators must now stake their own ETH as collateral. This mechanism creates a stronger bond between economic incentive and operational responsibility:

This minor adjustment primarily stems from the redistribution and optimization of operational costs under the new structure.
