The MENA Crypto Economy: A $443.3B Landscape of Contrasts
New data from Chainalysis paints a detailed picture of the Middle East and North Africa's cryptocurrency sector. The region's total crypto economy reached $443.3 billion for the reporting period, marking a slight 1.4% decline that mirrors broader global market trends.
A Tale of Two Markets: Turkey's Lead and UAE's Surge
Growth across the region is highly uneven. While 16 of the 24 markets tracked showed positive momentum, the economic weight remains concentrated. Turkey maintains its dominant position with a $144.5 billion market size.
The standout story is the United Arab Emirates, where the crypto economy expanded by an impressive 32% year-over-year to $104.8 billion. Together, Turkey and the UAE account for 56% of the entire MENA region's activity, creating a clear dual-engine dynamic.
Growth Masks Underlying Weakness
When excluding the UAE's exceptional performance, the picture changes. The remaining MENA markets collectively contracted by 8.6%, highlighting the fragility of growth outside the region's leading hubs.
Turkey's P2P Stablecoin Dominance
Turkey demonstrates distinct user behavior, particularly in peer-to-peer trading. Its P2P stablecoin volume grew to $3.56 billion—approximately triple the combined volume of the other 25 MENA markets. This underscores both local preference for stable assets and Turkey's role as a regional transaction nexus.
Regional Outlook: Divergence Ahead
The data suggests deepening divergence within MENA. Markets with progressive regulations and mature financial infrastructure, like the UAE, are pulling ahead. Others struggle to maintain momentum. This split will likely define the region's crypto landscape in coming periods.
