Mural Raises $15M Series A to Unify Cross-Border Payments for Businesses

On October 20, New York-based fintech startup Mural announced the successful closure of a $15 million Series A funding round. The investment was led by Tether, with participation from North Island Ventures. This latest infusion brings Mural's total funding to $28 million, underscoring strong investor confidence in its approach to modernizing business finance.

The company previously secured $5 million in seed funding back in 2022, which enabled initial product development and team building.

Founders with Deep Expertise Tackle Enterprise Payment Friction

Mural was co-founded in 2022 by Sinclair Toffa, former engineer at data giant Palantir, and Chris Fernandes. Their combined experience revealed a persistent pain point for businesses operating across borders: fragmented payment systems.

"Companies managing payments in multiple currencies and jurisdictions often juggle relationships with numerous banks, payment processors, and compliance providers. It's inefficient and costly," an industry insider noted.

The Unified Account: Bridging Traditional and Digital Finance

Mural's flagship product is a unified financial account platform designed specifically for businesses. Its primary clients include:

  • Payroll providers handling international employee payments
  • SaaS companies collecting subscriptions from global customers
  • Fintech firms seeking more fluid capital movement solutions

Through a single interface, businesses can hold and manage multiple asset types:

  • Traditional USD and other fiat currencies
  • Various local currencies
  • Major stablecoins

This flexibility allows companies to choose the most efficient settlement method for each transaction, significantly reducing intermediary steps and foreign exchange losses during cross-border transfers.

Streamlining Compliance and Cutting Costs

Beyond payments, Mural integrates compliance tools directly into its platform. It automates regulatory requirements across jurisdictions, such as anti-money laundering checks, transaction reporting, and tax-related processes. Clients can avoid building large internal compliance teams or integrating with multiple third-party services, lowering both operational complexity and overhead.

"We aim to be the foundational financial layer for global business operations, not just another payment processor," the founders stated.

Use of Funds and Market Position

The $15 million in new capital will be deployed across three key areas:

  • Product development: Expanding currency and regional coverage
  • Team growth: Hiring across engineering, compliance, and business development
  • Market expansion: Accelerating customer acquisition in North America, Europe, and Asia

As global commerce becomes increasingly digital, demand for efficient, transparent, and cost-effective cross-border payment solutions continues to rise. Infrastructure providers like Mural, which blend traditional and digital finance, are attracting growing attention from investors and enterprises alike.

Tether's leading role in this round also signals the deepening interest of major digital currency ecosystems in practical financial tools. The investment provides Mural not only with capital but also with strategic industry validation and networking opportunities.
