Nvidia and SoftBank Forge Alliance for Next-Gen AI Infrastructure
In a major move to solidify the foundation of artificial intelligence development, Nvidia has committed a $1.5 billion investment in SB Energy, a SoftBank Group company focused on renewable energy and digital infrastructure. The capital is earmarked for developing a massive data center campus dedicated to AI computing workloads at the Ports-Pike technology park in Ohio.
A 20-Year Compute Commitment for OpenAI
The project has already secured its anchor tenant. Under the agreement, SB Energy will operate the data centers, while OpenAI has signed a 20-year lease to become the primary customer. This long-term commitment ensures OpenAI will have a dedicated, large-scale source of computing power for its future model training and inference needs.
The Ports-Pike campus is planned to support an information technology load of up to 8 gigawatts, positioning it to be among the world's most powerful AI computing hubs. The development will proceed in phases. Nvidia is providing credit support for the initial 4.25-gigawatt phase and retains an option to expand capacity by an additional 3.75 gigawatts in the future.
Beyond Tech: Economic and Community Impact
The project's significance extends far beyond technology. The construction and operation of the Ports-Pike data center are expected to create tens of thousands of jobs in the region. To ensure the local community shares in the benefits, an $80 million community fund will be established. Furthermore, OpenAI has pledged an additional $40 million to a community benefits fund, supporting local education, workforce training, and other social development initiatives.
