In a recent essay, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang detailed the company's latest move: a partnership with energy developer SB Energy to secure land, power, and facility resources at the PORTS-Pike technology park in Portsmouth, Ohio. This isn't merely a real estate deal; it's about laying the physical foundation for the next generation of "AI factories."
From Silicon to Soil: The New Frontier of AI Competition
Huang made it clear that the current bottleneck for AI advancement is no longer just computational power, but the physical infrastructure needed to house it. "The demand for training and inference compute from AI labs is staggering," he wrote. "More compute leads directly to greater intelligence, more products, more users, and more revenue." Yet, this explosive demand is being severely constrained by traditional limits like power availability, land, and construction timelines.
The PORTS-Pike site is envisioned as a dedicated hub for Nvidia's computing systems, with a massive power capacity of up to 12 gigawatts to fuel large-scale AI model training and inference. AI research company OpenAI has been confirmed as the inaugural tenant, set to build and operate its own AI factory within the campus.
