Unconfirmed NVIDIA Rumors Trigger Market Meltdown in Huaqiangbei
In late October, unverified whispers about NVIDIA potentially halting supplies of certain consumer GPU models sent shockwaves through Shenzhen's Huaqiangbei electronics market. What followed was a pricing frenzy unlike anything the district—often called Asia's largest electronics hub—has seen in recent years.
Prices Launch into Orbit: High-End GPUs Triple in Value
The market chaos manifests most visibly in skyrocketing prices. Take the flagship RTX 5090: with an original MSRP around 16,000 RMB, current channel quotes have soared to 55,000-60,000 RMB—a near 300% increase.
The RTX 5080 tells a similar story. Originally priced at approximately 8,000 RMB, it now commands around 17,000 RMB. Even more staggering is its velocity: in just two weeks, its price jumped 4,000 to 5,000 RMB from a previous level of 12,000 RMB.
Veteran Insider: "Prices Change Daily"
Xiong Rongrong, a manager at Jinshuoli Computer with 16 years of experience in Huaqiangbei, witnessed the turmoil firsthand. "From late September through October, the entire PC components market has been laser-focused on graphics cards," he noted. "The most obvious sign is the extreme volatility. Quotes literally change every day."
He highlighted the RTX 5090's trajectory: "It was hovering around 30,000 RMB not long ago, then suddenly leaped to the 50,000 RMB range. Market sentiment is completely driven by this 'possible discontinuation' rumor. Many distributors are now holding stock, waiting and watching, which tightens supply and pushes prices even higher."
A Perfect Storm: Psychology Meets Supply-Demand Imbalance
This price surge isn't solely a supply-demand issue. Analysts point to a confluence of factors:
- The Amplification Effect of Uncertainty: Unconfirmed discontinuation rumors spread rapidly, triggering panic buying and speculation.
- Channel Inventory Sensitivity: Distributors and retailers are hyper-reactive to any supply chain signals, however faint.
- Underlying Demand Strength: Stable demand from AI computing, high-end gaming, and professional graphics work provides a floor for these price increases.
NVIDIA has not officially commented on the rumors. Yet Huaqiangbei's violent reaction demonstrates how even a minor ripple in the global GPU supply chain can amplify into a tsunami in this "electronics barometer." Market participants are anxiously awaiting any official word, knowing that confirmation or denial could trigger the next wave of price shocks.
