Major Funding Fuels On-Chain Structured Products Platform
The infrastructure layer for decentralized finance continues to attract significant capital. City Protocol, a project building foundational technology for on-chain structured products, has closed a combined $11 million seed and Pre-A funding round. The investment was led by prominent firms in the crypto space, including Dragonfly and Jump Crypto, signaling strong institutional belief in the future of complex financial products on the blockchain.
Bridging Traditional Finance and DeFi
City Protocol addresses a gap in the current DeFi landscape: the lack of accessible, sophisticated investment vehicles common in traditional finance. These structured products, which bundle assets and strategies to target specific risk-return profiles, have historically been reserved for institutional players.
The protocol’s architecture is built around three core layers:
- Tokenization Layer: Converts underlying assets or strategy rights into standardized on-chain tokens.
- Vault Layer: Manages and executes the core investment logic of each strategy.
- Issuance & Operations Layer: Provides the tools and interfaces for creating products and user interaction.
This modular approach aims to offer a complete toolkit for developers to launch new products and for investors to access them.
Venzo Platform: $40M in Assets Under Management
The primary application of this infrastructure is Venzo, City Protocol’s flagship platform. It currently hosts several live strategy vaults with a total value locked (TVL) exceeding $40 million. These vaults offer exposure to strategies once difficult for individual investors to access:
- Quantitative Hedging: Algorithmic strategies designed to navigate market volatility.
- Cross-Exchange Arbitrage: Capturing price discrepancies across different trading venues.
- Private Credit: Providing access to on-chain private credit markets.
By tokenizing these strategies, Venzo dramatically lowers the barrier to entry, allowing users to gain exposure simply by holding tokens representing a share of a vault.
What’s Next: Thematic Vaults and Automated Execution
Looking ahead, the Venzo team plans to introduce "Thematic Vaults," expanding beyond pure financial engineering into niche and narrative-driven investments.
These will be categorized into two main types:
- Persona-Tracking: Vaults that potentially mirror the disclosed portfolios of notable investors or fund managers.
- Sector-Themed: Baskets of assets centered on specific trends or sectors like AI, Layer 2 solutions, or the metaverse.
A key innovation is the proposed execution method. The buying and rebalancing of assets for these thematic vaults will be performed automatically by smart contracts, following transparent, pre-set rules directly within a user's wallet. This approach aims to enhance transparency and user control over assets.
The fresh capital will enable City Protocol to accelerate development and ecosystem growth. This move points to a broader evolution in DeFi, where the market matures from simple asset trading toward a richer landscape of structured, strategy-based investment opportunities, merging the sophistication of traditional finance with the openness of decentralized protocols.
