X Platform Announces Major Shift in Creator Monetization Strategy
In a significant move to reshape its creator ecosystem, X has unveiled a new incentive program that fundamentally changes how content producers earn money on the platform. The company is sunsetting its established Revenue Sharing model in favor of an Original Content Rewards initiative.
Timeline for the Transition
The platform has stopped accepting new applications for the Revenue Sharing program effective immediately. Creators currently enrolled in the old system will continue to receive payouts under the existing terms until September 7, 2026, ensuring a lengthy transition period.
The final three payments for this program are scheduled to be distributed around August 14, August 28, and September 11.
How the New Rewards Program Works
Starting September 8, eligible existing creators can apply to join the new Original Content Rewards plan. The core mechanism for earning has been completely reimagined.
Earnings will now be calculated based on "Qualified Impressions" generated by original content. X defines this as impressions that occur within the home timeline of an X Premium or Premium+ subscriber, with at least 50% of the post visible on screen. This shift places a direct premium on content visibility and engagement within the platform's paying user base.
The first payout under this new model is expected to be issued on August 28, which precedes the official application date for the new plan.
Eligibility Requirements for the New Plan
To qualify for the Original Content Rewards, creators must meet a specific set of criteria designed to identify established, high-quality contributors:
- Be at least 18 years old with an account in good standing.
- Subscribe to X Premium or Premium+.
- Have at least 500 verified followers.
- Accumulate a minimum of 5 million impressions on the home timelines of verified users over the past 90 days.
- Consistently publish original content (not mere amplification or reposting).
These requirements signal the platform's intent to reward creators who consistently produce valuable, unique content and have already cultivated reach within its core community.
Implications for the Creator Community
This policy overhaul is poised to significantly impact the creator landscape on X. By moving from ad-revenue sharing to directly paying for qualified exposure of original work, the platform is clearly prioritizing content quality and uniqueness.
For creators, adapting to the new rules will require a sharper focus on producing deep analysis, professional commentary, or creative work that resonates. The new challenge—and opportunity—will be optimizing content to achieve high rates of qualified impressions among premium subscribers.
