Polish Crypto Exchange Fraud Investigation Intensifies

On September 8, Polish prosecutors formally brought two criminal charges, including fraud, against Roman Ż., a former business partner of the cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto. This individual becomes the fifth suspect charged in connection with the platform's alleged large-scale fraud and money laundering activities.

Core of the Case: Trading Halt and Massive Losses

Zondacrypto, which once boasted over a million registered users, abruptly halted all trading activities in April this year following widespread client withdrawal freezes. Preliminary estimates indicate user losses of at least $94 million. By June, prosecutors had received more than 3,600 complaints related to the incident, prompting a broadening investigation.

Linked Investigation into Founder's Disappearance

The case is complicated by its direct link to the disappearance of the exchange's founder, Sylwester Suszek, who has been missing since March 2022. Suszek was previously the founder and CEO of another well-known exchange, BitBay. Polish authorities have merged the investigations to trace fund flows and establish liability.

Recent Developments and Other Figures Involved

Roman Ż. was arrested in Poland last Saturday, and prosecutors are seeking pre-trial detention. The suspect has denied all allegations.

The scope of the case extends beyond the exchange's operations:

  • Radosław Piesiewicz, President of the Polish Olympic Committee, was previously charged with accepting protection money and favoring certain creditors as the exchange neared collapse.
  • Three other individuals were detained last week, indicating a tightening investigative net.

With the fifth suspect now formally charged, this complex case involving international users, substantial funds, and a missing person is progressing into a deeper phase of judicial scrutiny.
