A Deflationary Shift: Polygon's POL Burn Rate Outstrips New Supply

The Polygon network has reached a significant economic milestone in 2026. Co-founder Sandeep Nailwal recently shared on-chain metrics revealing a fundamental change in the supply dynamics of its native token, POL.

Burns Exceed Minting for the First Time

According to the data, the network has minted approximately 105.2 million new POL tokens since the start of the year. In stark contrast, the base fee burn mechanism has permanently removed about 107.7 million POL from circulation during the same period.

This results in a net reduction of around 2.5 million POL, marking the first time Polygon has achieved annual net deflation—where the total token supply is actively decreasing.

Network Activity Fuels the Deflation Engine

The primary driver behind this supply contraction is the sheer volume of transactions processed on Polygon's chains, particularly those optimized for payments and high-throughput use cases.

"The reduction in POL supply is largely due to base fee burns from high transaction volume on Polygon as a payment chain," Sandeep noted. Every transaction requires a base fee, which is paid in POL and subsequently burned, creating a direct link between usage and token scarcity.
