Reddit Homepage Gets a Major Redesign: Introducing Dual Feeds

Reddit has rolled out a significant update to its homepage, fundamentally changing how users encounter content. The platform now features two distinct feed options: “Following” and “For You,” marking a shift towards a more tailored browsing experience.

Two Feeds, Two Purposes

The “Following” feed offers a focused view. It exclusively displays posts from the subreddits a user has actively joined or subscribed to, creating a streamlined space dedicated to known communities.

The “For You” feed, on the other hand, is designed for exploration. It blends posts from a user's subscribed communities with algorithmically generated recommendations based on their interests and activity. This introduces an element of discovery alongside familiar content.

The Strategy Behind the Change

Reddit describes this redesign as a move to simplify the platform and enhance personalization on the homepage. This follows the earlier announcement of phasing out the site-wide “r/all” page. A user-friendly feature remembers a user's last-used feed preference, defaulting to it upon their next visit for continuity.

Access to the Legacy Experience

Users who prefer the legacy homepage with its traditional sorting options (“best,” “hot,” “new,” etc.) can still access it by visiting the “old.reddit.com” domain or enabling the “Old Reddit” option in their settings.

However, Reddit has indicated plans to potentially restrict access to Old Reddit for accounts that haven't used it recently, signaling a push towards broader adoption of the new interface.

A Step Towards Better Discovery

Reddit positions this new feed structure as the initial step in a broader initiative to help users discover new ideas, connections, and interests organically. The success of this update will depend on how effectively it balances user control with algorithmic suggestion, fostering a more dynamic and interconnected community.
