RedotPay Enters Japanese Market Through Acquisition of Licensed Exchange
Crypto payment service provider RedotPay has acquired BTCBOX, a licensed cryptocurrency exchange in Japan. This strategic move allows RedotPay to access the Japanese market through a fully compliant and regulated entity. The acquisition underscores RedotPay's commitment to operating within established legal frameworks in key jurisdictions.
Service Transition: Shifting to a Licensed Platform
As RedotPay does not hold a Japanese crypto asset exchange license itself, the company is restructuring its services for the region. Key immediate actions include:
- Halting new user registrations from Japan, with its app removed from Japanese app stores.
- Phasing out and eventually terminating existing services for Japanese residents.
- Moving forward, RedotPay will operate in Japan primarily by providing financial and technical support to the fully licensed BTCBOX exchange, ensuring all activities adhere to local regulations.
BTCBOX: A Regulated Japanese Exchange
Founded in 2014, BTCBOX obtained its registration as a crypto asset exchange operator from Japanese authorities in September 2017. The exchange temporarily suspended services earlier this year following a customer information leak, resuming operations in phases from August 3rd. The infusion of support from RedotPay is expected to bolster BTCBOX's operations.
This acquisition resolves RedotPay's regulatory access challenge in Japan and sets a potential precedent for expansion into other regulated markets in the Asia-Pacific region. By leveraging BTCBOX's local expertise and compliance infrastructure, RedotPay positions itself to compete effectively in Japan's mature crypto market.
