Lavrov Outlines Preconditions for Mending Russia-U.S. Ties in New York Talks
During the UN General Assembly in New York, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with the U.S. Secretary of State, suggesting a potential thaw in bilateral relations. Lavrov noted that recent discussions on economic cooperation, cultural exchanges, and visa facilitation between the two nations have intensified, creating a conducive atmosphere for improvement.
The Roadmap: Removing Irritants and Returning Assets
Lavrov laid out clear prerequisites for mending ties. He stated that both sides must engage in frank dialogue to eliminate key irritants in the relationship. This includes not only political issues but also restoring normal functioning for their respective diplomatic missions.
A critical condition he emphasized is the return of Russian state assets that have been effectively seized in the United States. From Moscow's perspective, progress on this front is non-negotiable for any meaningful improvement in relations.
The Dual-Track Approach on Ukraine
Regarding the Ukraine crisis, Lavrov reiterated Russia's established position. He mentioned close coordination between Ukrainian authorities and their European backers, while outlining a two-pronged strategy:
- On the military front: Continuing to pursue the objectives of the special military operation.
- On the diplomatic front: Seeking a political and diplomatic resolution to the conflict, but only on the basis of addressing its root causes.
The talks followed earlier understandings reached between the two countries' leaders. Lavrov's remarks indicate that Russia has translated that high-level consensus into specific, actionable demands, setting the agenda for future engagement.
