SAIC and Momenta Forge Joint Venture to Propel Autonomous Driving
SAIC Motor’s board has greenlit a proposal to establish a joint venture with autonomous driving technology firm Momenta and Yandian Tech. The new entity, with a registered capital of 300 million yuan (approximately $41 million), is designed to intensify research and development in high-level autonomous driving systems, aiming for faster technology commercialization.
Clear Equity Structure with Tech Leadership
The investment breakdown and shareholding for the joint venture are as follows:
- Momenta: contributing 153 million yuan for a 51% controlling stake.
- SAIC Motor: investing 75 million yuan for a 25% share.
- Yandian Tech: investing 72 million yuan for a 24% share.
This arrangement gives SAIC and Yandian Tech a combined 49% stake, while Momenta—the technology provider—secures majority control. The structure underscores SAIC’s confidence in Momenta’s software and algorithmic capabilities and positions the tech firm to lead the venture’s R&D roadmap.
Strategic Aim: Boosting Global Competitiveness
The partnership goes beyond a financial investment. For SAIC, one of China’s largest automakers, the move is a strategic effort to accelerate its capabilities in software-defined vehicles. By deeply integrating Momenta’s autonomous driving stack with its own manufacturing scale, global distribution, and supply chain, SAIC aims to enhance the intelligent features of its future vehicle models.
High-level automated driving functions are becoming critical differentiators in the global automotive market. This joint venture creates a dedicated channel to embed advanced technology into SAIC’s products, potentially shortening development cycles and improving market responsiveness.
Industry analysts view this as another significant step in the convergence between traditional automakers and tech-driven mobility startups. As the industry shifts toward an integrated “hardware plus software” model, similar collaborative structures are likely to emerge.
