Samsung Bets Big on the Fusion of AI and the Physical World

South Korea's industrial landscape is set for a monumental shift. Samsung Electronics has unveiled a plan to invest approximately 60 trillion won (around $45 billion) in the Yeongnam region, aiming to construct a super-cluster dedicated to cutting-edge R&D and advanced manufacturing. At the heart of this initiative is a concept known as "physical AI"—deeply integrating artificial intelligence and robotics into tangible industries to create a new growth engine.

Four Strategic Pillars: From Humanoids to Next-Gen Power

Samsung's blueprint reveals a focused strategy targeting several future-defining sectors:

  • Humanoid Robots: Viewed as the next generation of universal machines with potential in complex manufacturing, services, and care.
  • Solid-State Batteries: This breakthrough technology is seen as the next leap for electric vehicles and safe energy storage, an area where Samsung seeks leadership.
  • AI Server Packaging Substrates: As global demand for AI compute explodes, high-performance, high-density advanced packaging becomes critical infrastructure for data centers.
  • High-Value Shipbuilding: Including LNG carriers and large container ships, enhancing a traditional Korean strength with smart and automated technologies.

Building the "Yeongnam Cluster": From Factory Floor to Innovation Hub

Samsung's ambition extends beyond building isolated factories. The strategy is to link key industrial cities in the region—including Gumi, Ulsan, Busan, and Geoje—into a synergistic innovation ecosystem. Samsung President & Head of DX (Device eXperience) Roh Tae-moon recently outlined the vision: to upgrade the area from a traditional manufacturing base to a world-leading physical AI innovation cluster by merging AI transformation with existing industrial muscle.

"We plan to create about 200,000 high-quality new jobs in the Yeongnam region through concentrated investment," Roh stated. This signals demand for talent across the entire value chain, from R&D and design to advanced production and maintenance.

The Broader Impact: Reshaping Korea's Industrial Map

This investment is seen as a pivotal move for South Korea in the global tech race, specifically the trend of converging AI with the physical economy. It marks a strategic pivot for Samsung and national policy: moving beyond dominance in consumer electronics or semiconductors alone, and proactively extending AI into the broader physical world to seize the high ground in robotics, next-generation energy, and smart manufacturing.
