As the global artificial intelligence boom shows no signs of slowing, the semiconductor industry is approaching a critical inflection point. SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won recently shared his insights, painting a stark picture of a severe imbalance between soaring demand and stagnant supply.
Staggering Demand Forecasts vs. a Harsh Supply Reality
According to Choi's analysis, the global semiconductor market is poised for an unprecedented surge in demand next year. Demand for AI-related chips is projected to skyrocket by 60% to 100% compared to this year, with overall semiconductor product demand expected to grow by at least 50%-60%. This growth is fundamentally driven by the worldwide scramble for AI computing power.
This red-hot demand, however, clashes with a frigid supply outlook. Choi explicitly warned that the new supply entering the market next year will be "almost zero." This implies that existing manufacturing capacity will be utterly inadequate to handle the incoming tidal wave of demand, likely causing the supply-demand gap to widen dramatically.

Governments must actively intervene to help their domestic companies acquire necessary chip resources to sustain basic production and economic activity. While the pressure is currently concentrated at the corporate level, he anticipates it could escalate into inter-state rivalry, with South Korea itself potentially facing direct pressure from other nations.

Choi described the current global supply-demand situation for memory chips as being in a "state of chaos." This turmoil stems from a confluence of factors:
