New reports indicate a significant strategic shift for Japanese conglomerate SoftBank Group. Its mobile communications division is advancing plans to convert a major production facility in Osaka into a state-of-the-art battery manufacturing hub.
The Driving Force Behind the Move
This decision stems from a critical industry need. The explosive growth of artificial intelligence has created an insatiable demand for computing power, making reliable and efficient energy supply for data centers a top priority. After considering various options for the Sakai City plant, SoftBank's leadership identified energy infrastructure as the key to securing its AI future.
The project aims to establish a battery production site with total capacity reaching several gigawatt-hours (GWh), positioning it to become one of Japan's largest facilities of its kind.
A Two-Phase Rollout Plan
- Phase One: Internal Power Source: The initial output will be dedicated to powering SoftBank's own AI data centers, ensuring stable and uninterrupted computing services.
- Phase Two: External Energy Supply: Subsequently, the company intends to offer its battery solutions to other Japanese corporations, supporting broader national goals for digital transformation and sustainable energy.
The project is slated to come online within the next five years, with full details to be announced by CEO Junichi Miyakawa in May. This initiative marks a clear expansion for SoftBank, moving beyond telecom and investment into the foundational energy layer of the digital economy.
