South Korea's Crypto Trading Volume Surges to 10-Month High

The South Korean cryptocurrency market has witnessed a powerful rebound in trading activity. During the week of August 21 to 28, the combined trading volume of the country's five major virtual asset exchanges soared to approximately 31.1 trillion won, equivalent to over $23 billion.

Record-Breaking Weekly Figures

This represents a staggering week-on-week increase of 188% compared to the previous week's 10.8 trillion won. The surge not only indicates a sharp rise in market activity but also marks the highest weekly trading volume since late October of last year, setting a new peak for the past ten months.

Dominant Players Hold Their Ground

In terms of market share, the leading exchanges maintained their strong positions. Upbit retained its top spot with a 59.61% market share, while Bithumb followed closely with 33.11%. Together, these two platforms command over 90% of the total market.

A Shift in the Competitive Landscape

The most notable development this week was the change for third place. The rebranded DigitalX (formerly Korbit) delivered an impressive performance, seeing its market share jump by roughly 3.5 percentage points to reach 4.21%.

This growth allowed it to overtake Coinone (3.05%) and climb to the third position. This is also the highest market share DigitalX has achieved in nearly 20 weeks, signaling strong momentum following its rebranding efforts.

Market observers suggest the explosive growth in trading volume could be linked to a general improvement in sentiment across the global crypto market and increased domestic interest in specific assets within South Korea. The fierce competition among top exchanges, particularly the shift in rankings among mid-tier players, points to a more dynamic phase of development for the country's crypto trading landscape.
