Court Orders Return of Crypto Gains: Landmark Ruling on Exchange Error in South Korea

A Seoul court has issued a groundbreaking verdict in a case stemming from a major cryptocurrency exchange's operational blunder. The court has ruled that users who profited from mistakenly received Bitcoin must return the proceeds, marking a significant legal precedent for handling "unjust enrichment" in the digital asset space.

The Costly Mistake: From KRW to BTC

The dispute originated from an internal promotional event where the exchange intended to distribute rewards in Korean Won. Due to an input or system error, the rewards were incorrectly issued in Bitcoin (BTC) instead. This glitch led to the erroneous distribution of approximately 620,000 BTC to users.

While representing an enormous notional value at the time, the exchange moved swiftly upon discovering the error. In March, it filed separate lawsuits against four users who had sold the misdirected Bitcoin and retained the fiat proceeds, arguing they were unjustly enriched.

The Legal Decision: Unjust Enrichment Applied to Digital Assets

The Seoul Central District Court's ruling centered on the principle that the users' acquisition and subsequent sale of the Bitcoin, knowing it resulted from an obvious platform error, lacked legal justification. Therefore, the fiat proceeds from the sale constituted unjust enrichment subject to restitution.

This case, involving about 194 million Korean Won, is the first of four such lawsuits to be decided. The other cases involve sums of approximately 500 million won, 14.8 million won, and 5 million won, respectively.

Broader Implications for the Crypto Industry

The case has been closely watched by regulators. South Korea's Financial Services Commission previously highlighted that the error involved a notional value of around 61 trillion won, underscoring critical risk management failures.

This verdict sets several important precedents for the industry:

  • Clarifies User Accountability: Users who knowingly profit from clear platform errors may not be entitled to keep those gains.
  • Highlights Operational Risks: The ruling serves as a stark warning for all exchanges to enforce rigorous internal controls and financial safeguards.
  • Extends Legal Frameworks: It confirms that traditional legal doctrines like unjust enrichment are applicable to cryptocurrency-related disputes.

For everyday users, the case is a reminder to exercise caution. Encountering unexpected, windfall crypto deposits warrants verification with the platform to avoid potential legal complications.
