Trading Volume on South Korean Crypto Exceeds Hits Multi-Year Low

Recent data paints a clear picture of cooling activity in South Korea's digital asset market. The combined weekly trading volume of the country's five major compliant cryptocurrency exchanges has fallen below a significant threshold.

Sustained Decline Reaches Critical Level

From July 3rd to 10th, the total trading volume across these five platforms amounted to approximately 9.9676 trillion won. This figure represents a drop of over 25% compared to the previous week's volume of about 13.4 trillion won. More notably, it is the first time since late September 2023 that the weekly volume has dipped below the 10 trillion won mark.

The downward trend becomes even more pronounced over a longer period. Compared to the roughly 17.7 trillion won recorded in early June, the market has seen a cumulative decline of 43.5% in just over a month. This recent drop below 10 trillion won establishes a new low not seen in approximately two years and nine months, or nearly 33 months.

Market Leadership Shows Signs of Softening

As the overall market contracts, the competitive landscape among exchanges is experiencing subtle shifts. While Upbit maintains its leading position with a majority market share, its dominance has slightly waned. Upbit's share for the week stood at 63.02%, a decrease of nearly 4 percentage points from the prior week.

This shift suggests that as market sentiment turns cautious, trading behavior may be becoming more fragmented, or user activity on the dominant platform is moderating.

Interpreting the Market Cooldown

A sustained weekly decline in trading volume reaching a multi-year low is often a key indicator of a market entering a low-volatility or wait-and-see phase. For a retail-investor-driven market like South Korea, the sharp contraction could point to several underlying factors:

  • Global Market Sentiment: Reduced volatility or a lack of clear directional trends in the international crypto market may be dampening local trading appetite.
  • Regulatory Landscape: Ongoing regulatory scrutiny from South Korean authorities might be prompting a more cautious approach among some participants.
  • Seasonal Flows or Rotation: Capital may be temporarily rotating into other traditional or emerging asset classes.

Trading volume serves as a crucial thermometer for market liquidity and health. The current data may signal that the South Korean crypto market is entering a consolidation phase. Its ability to regain momentum will likely depend on broader macroeconomic conditions and internal industry developments.
