The Rise of Staking in South Korea: A $3.4 Billion Ecosystem

Recent figures paint a vivid picture of South Korea's embrace of crypto staking. By the end of July, the combined value of assets staked through the country's four major won-based exchanges—Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, and Korbit—had reached approximately $3.4 billion. More impressively, the number of users participating in these staking programs soared past 1.22 million. This massive scale underscores how staking for passive income has evolved from a niche activity to a mainstream financial service within the Korean digital asset landscape.

A Tale of Two Metrics: Asset Concentration vs. User Distribution

Digging into the data reveals a market characterized by a clear split between where the value lies and where the users are. In terms of pure asset value, the market is highly concentrated.

  • Upbit maintains a dominant position, hosting about $1.76 billion in staked assets, which commands a 51.8% market share.
  • Bithumb follows with roughly $1.48 billion, accounting for 43.4%.

Together, these two giants control over 95% of the total staked capital on these platforms.

The User Race: Bithumb Takes the Lead

The narrative shifts when examining user counts. Since January, Bithumb has overtaken Upbit in terms of the number of staking participants. As of July, Bithumb served around 592,700 staking users, representing 48.4% of the total user base across the four exchanges, while Upbit counted approximately 359,500 users. This suggests Bithumb's strategies—whether through marketing, user experience, or competitive reward rates—have been particularly effective in attracting a broader segment of retail investors.

The participation is driven by tangible rewards. On average, users across these platforms have been earning a collective $7.57 million in staking rewards each month this year. This steady stream of income reinforces user engagement and provides exchanges with a more stable deposit base.

Implications and Trajectory

The growth of South Korea's staking market highlights several trends: regulated, fiat-onramp exchanges are the primary gateways for mainstream staking adoption, and competition among platforms is now multi-faceted, encompassing assets, users, and services. While capital remains concentrated, user loyalty appears more fluid, influenced by platform-specific offerings. As regulatory clarity improves and more proof-of-stake networks gain traction, this vibrant market is poised for further evolution and expansion.
