The Evolving Payment Landscape: Wallets Thrive, New Tech Stumbles
A recent "Voice of the Customer" survey for Q2 by S&P Global Market Intelligence paints a clear picture of shifting habits in the United States. While one digital technology has rapidly achieved everyday status, others are still struggling to gain public confidence.
Digital Wallets: From Novelty to Normalcy
The adoption numbers for digital wallets are striking. 67% of US consumers reported using a digital wallet for payment within the last 90 days. Perhaps more significant is the depth of engagement: 45% of users rely on them weekly. This transition from occasional use to regular habit signals that digital wallets have successfully integrated into the mainstream commerce ecosystem, valued for their convenience and streamlined experience.
Cryptocurrency & Stablecoins: A Persistent Trust Deficit
In stark contrast, cryptocurrencies and stablecoins face a steep uphill battle for acceptance. The survey highlights several core issues:
- Low Awareness and Adoption: A substantial 68% of consumers have never interacted with cryptocurrency. Awareness of stablecoins is even narrower, at just 16%.
- Security and Fraud Top Concerns: Among those aware of stablecoins, 48% cited fraud risk as a major worry, followed closely by fund safety (46%).
- Questioning Utility: A majority (59%) see no practical use for cryptocurrencies, and 39% believe stablecoins are simply "unnecessary," suggesting current payment options adequately meet their needs.
AI Agents: Sharing the Trust Hurdle
The report also notes that artificial intelligence agents, particularly in financial or consumer roles, encounter a similar trust barrier. Consumers remain wary of ceding decision-making or asset control to automated AI systems. This inherent caution towards complex, emerging technologies represents a significant psychological hurdle to widespread adoption.
The findings reveal a clear divide. Consumers are quick to embrace technologies that offer seamless, incremental improvements to existing routines—like digital wallets. However, technologies that require a fundamental shift in how value is held or trusted, such as crypto-assets and AI agents, are met with skepticism. Building trust, ensuring security, and demonstrating undeniable utility remain the non-negotiable prerequisites for crossing into the mainstream.
