SpaceX Bets Entirely on NVIDIA AI, Mapping a Celestial Computing Future

During a recent company briefing, SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk revealed a pivotal strategic move: all of SpaceX's future artificial intelligence services will run exclusively on NVIDIA's computing systems. Musk stated that after thorough evaluation, the company considers NVIDIA's Vera Rubin architecture to be the "best AI computing architecture" currently available.

Computing Scale and Deployment Roadmap

Musk also outlined an ambitious timeline for the company's computing capacity build-out. SpaceX expects its total computational power to exceed 2 gigawatts (GW) by the end of this year. That figure is projected to surge to nearly 10 GW by the end of next year, highlighting both massive demand and rapid expansion plans.

More striking is the deployment strategy. SpaceX intends to deploy NVIDIA's NVL72 rack-scale systems not only in terrestrial data centers but also in space. This integrated ground-and-orbit approach is designed to deliver substantial onboard computing power for its core "Starmind" satellite project.

The "Starmind" Project and the Orbital Data Center Vision

The "Starmind" satellite initiative is the central vehicle for this strategy. The first satellites equipped with NVIDIA's advanced computing units are scheduled to begin launching next year. This move signals SpaceX's expansion from traditional space transportation and communications into the frontier of orbital computing and data services.

By integrating high-performance computing hardware directly onto satellites, SpaceX aims to construct a distributed network of space-based data centers. This architecture promises several potential advantages:
