SpaceX Bears Circle Ahead of Critical Milestones

As SpaceX approaches two major events in its public market journey, short sellers are rapidly increasing their bets against the company. Recent data shows short interest has surged to approximately 219.3 million shares, representing about 34% of the stock currently available for public trading. This marks a dramatic rise from the 23.3 million shares reported in mid-June.

The Twin Catalysts: Earnings vs. Supply Glut

The market’s attention is fixed on a dual challenge: the company’s debut quarterly earnings release as a public entity, followed closely by the expiration of lockup restrictions on hundreds of millions of shares. Post-expiry, the float is expected to more than double, jumping from around 5% to roughly 12% of total outstanding shares.

Sam Pierson, Head of Research at S3 Partners, summarized the prevailing sentiment: “The big bet here is centered on the unlock. Traders are positioning for the possibility that a positive earnings report may not be enough to offset the impact of a sudden influx of sellable stock.”

Short Interest Outpaces Tesla

In a notable shift, the current value of bearish positions against SpaceX now exceeds that of Tesla, a traditional favorite target for short sellers. This highlights how speculative attention is pivoting toward the space exploration pioneer.

With the key dates imminent, the battle between bulls and bears intensifies. The central question remains: can a potentially strong earnings report overcome the downward pressure from a looming supply surge? The outcome of this fundamental supply-demand contest will soon be clear.
