Spain's Foreign Minister Stands Firm Against US Base Request

On March 3, Spain's Foreign Minister Alvarez publicly justified the government's decision to deny the US access to Rota and Morón military bases for operations against Iran.

He stressed that the joint military action by the US and Israel lacked UN backing and fell outside the scope of the bilateral agreement between Spain and the US regarding base usage.

Upholding International Law and Public Sentiment

Alvarez pointed out that Spain's position reflects the will of the majority of its citizens and much of the global population — a commitment to the UN Charter, respect for international law, and a belief that cooperation is more effective than confrontation.

He also noted that the government remains unshaken by potential repercussions and will continue to safeguard its independent foreign policy.
