Stablecoin Market Cap Shrinks by $100 Billion as Capital Migrates
The prolonged downturn in the crypto market has triggered a significant capital shift. On-chain data reveals that the aggregate market capitalization of USD-denominated stablecoins has contracted by approximately $100 billion over the past six months, now standing around $3 trillion. A clear trend is emerging: substantial capital exiting the stablecoin ecosystem is flowing into the US stock market, which has demonstrated stronger performance and wealth effects this year.
Divergent Flows Highlight Investor Preferences
Recent quarterly movements show stark contrasts between major stablecoins, underscoring varying investor strategies.
- Tether (USDT): The largest stablecoin by market cap saw its supply decrease from roughly $189.8 billion to $184.1 billion, resulting in a net outflow of about $5.7 billion.
- USD Coin (USDC): Faced more significant outflows. Its supply dropped from approximately $79.6 billion to $73 billion, marking a net outflow of $6.6 billion—the largest among major stablecoins during this period.
The pressure extends beyond the token itself. Circle, the issuer of USDC, has seen its stock price retreat from around $136 to near $64, indicating a notable cooling in market expectations for its growth trajectory.
Growth Against the Trend: Incentives vs. Organic Demand
Amid the widespread exodus, a few stablecoins managed to attract net inflows. For instance, stablecoin USD1 recorded roughly $500 million in net inflows, with its total supply growing from $4.1 billion to $4.6 billion.
Market observers, however, caution that this growth may not stem purely from organic demand. Some analysts suggest it is closely tied to interest subsidy programs and trading incentive campaigns offered by certain exchanges. These programs reward users for holding and transacting with the asset, artificially boosting its metrics in the short term.
This dynamic raises questions about the genuine utility and sustainable demand for some stablecoins. As market sentiment shifts and capital chases higher yields, the structural changes within the stablecoin landscape become increasingly apparent.
