Stablecoin Transfers Soar to $891B: The Rise of 24/7 Financial Infrastructure

A new report commissioned by Coinbase and conducted by The Block Research reveals explosive growth in the stablecoin ecosystem during the third quarter of 2026. The adjusted quarterly transfer volume reached $891 billion, equating to over $400 million moving per hour across stablecoin networks. This figure represents a more than fourfold increase since early 2023, underscoring the asset class's expanding role in daily financial activity.

Active When Banks Are Closed

A striking finding centers on timing. A significant 73% of the screened stablecoin transfer volume occurred outside standard U.S. banking hours—encompassing nights, weekends, and public holidays. This statistic highlights how the "always-on" nature of blockchain networks is addressing a gap in traditional finance, meeting global demand for real-time, round-the-clock settlement.

Corporate Adoption Gains Momentum

Enterprise adoption is accelerating beyond experimentation:

  • Banking Sector Engagement: Seven of the top ten U.S. banks are now testing stablecoins or tokenized deposits for settlement use cases.
  • Mid-Market Trailblazers: Among midsize companies engaged in cross-border operations, the share using or piloting stablecoins has surged to 30%, up from 10% in 2024.
  • B2B Payments Growth: Business-to-business payment volume using stablecoins grew 36% year-over-year, indicating utility in trade finance and supply chains.

Network Scale and Hypothetical Impact

The report identified approximately 293 million blockchain addresses holding stablecoins—a number exceeding the combined cardholder bases of American Express and Discover. Researchers noted that address count does not equate to unique users, as one individual can control multiple addresses.

The aggregate stablecoin market capitalization stood at approximately $301.4 billion at the time of the report, remaining relatively stable even as trading volume increased. The study also modeled a hypothetical scenario: if 80% of international transactions migrated to stablecoin networks, it could add roughly $155 billion to global GDP annually and unlock an estimated $3 trillion in liquidity. The researchers emphasized this is a theoretical model, not realized economic gain, and widespread adoption could potentially reduce bank lending, offsetting some benefits.

Overall, the report paints a picture of stablecoins transitioning from a niche experiment to a core component of financial infrastructure. The growth is not just in volume but in reshaping how, when, and by whom value is transferred, introducing new dynamics into the global financial system.
