Ethereum AI Lead Proposes Revolutionary API Access Model

Davide Crapis, the AI lead at the Ethereum Foundation, has introduced a novel approach to API access by advocating for a staking-based system in place of traditional identity verification.

Currently, most APIs require users to link their email, credit card, or wallet address, creating an identity-driven access model that dominates the internet. However, Crapis argues that this model not only compromises user privacy but is also at risk of being exploited with the advancement of AI technologies.

How Does the Staking Mechanism Work?

The proposal suggests that users deposit a certain amount of Ether to gain access to API resources. Once staked, users can make thousands of API calls while maintaining full anonymity.

Importantly, the system includes a penalty clause. If misuse is detected, the staked assets may be confiscated, effectively deterring malicious activities.

Vitalik Buterin Endorses Privacy-Driven Innovation

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has voiced his support for the proposal, emphasizing that this approach not only safeguards user privacy but also drives fundamental innovation in decentralized networks.

Buterin highlighted the importance of integrating foundational technologies like ZK privacy payments and reputation systems, rather than simply replicating existing systems on the blockchain.

Moving Toward a Truly Decentralized Internet

This proposal marks a significant evolution in privacy protection and access control in blockchain technology. By combining economic incentives with privacy features, Ethereum is exploring a fairer, more transparent, and secure network ecosystem.

If implemented, this model could free API access from centralized identity systems and enable a truly decentralized, scalable, and secure web service model.
