A Swift Strategic Exit: From SOL Treasury Giant to Zero Holdings
The cryptocurrency market recently observed a dramatic corporate strategy reversal. SkyAI (formerly Sharps Technology) has liquidated its entire position in Solana (SOL), redirecting the proceeds to fund a significant stock and warrant repurchase program. This move marks a complete exit from crypto holdings for a company that was once the fifth-largest public treasury holder of SOL.
The Liquidation and Capital Redirection
As of October 16, SkyAI reported holding approximately $223.8 million in cash and confirmed the sale of all its SOL. The company's proposed buyback aims to repurchase up to 95% of its outstanding shares and warrants at $3.00 per unit. Preliminary estimates suggest that if fully subscribed, the company would retain about $22.5 million pre-fees. Notably, with the SOL position cleared, a previous condition requiring SOL's price to remain above $100 for the buyback has been removed.
A Sudden Pivot and Shareholder Backlash
The speed of this exit took many by surprise. In mid-September, SkyAI publicly reaffirmed its Solana treasury strategy, claiming holdings exceeding 2 million SOL. The narrative shifted abruptly in October: an announcement on the 11th revealed the sale of roughly 1 million SOL, followed by regulatory filings showing a plummeting balance of around 600,000 coins.
This rapid asset disposal triggered a strong reaction from major shareholder Bastion Trading, which owns nearly 10% of SkyAI. The firm publicly expressed dissatisfaction, called for an independent review, and explicitly refused to participate in the buyback under the current terms. Bastion presented a counter-proposal demanding:
- An increase in the buyback price to $3.50 per share
- Restrictions on participation by company insiders
- Exclusion of warrants held by strategic advisors from the repurchase
The Road Ahead: An AI-Finance Vision in Question
Despite divesting its crypto assets, SkyAI continues to describe its future as involving a financial platform that merges Solana's stablecoin infrastructure with artificial intelligence. However, the latest announcement provided no clarity on whether the company intends to rebuild its SOL treasury or offered any substantive update on this platform's development. For now, the firm's stated plan is to maintain its Nasdaq listing following the share repurchase.
The market's initial reaction to this strategic upheaval has been mixed. In the latest trading session, SkyAI (ticker: SKYA) saw its stock price rise 4.5% to $2.77, bringing its year-to-date gain to 35%. The long-term implications of this swift transition from crypto advocate to liquidator remain to be seen.
