Stripe and Plasma Unveil Plan for Global Stablecoin Payment Network
A significant shift in the payments landscape is on the horizon. Stripe, a leading payment processing platform, in collaboration with its partner Plasma, has announced an ambitious roadmap to expand their jointly developed stablecoin payment card service. The goal is to extend its reach from the current operational base of over 30 countries to more than 100 nations by 2027, signaling a major push to integrate stablecoins into mainstream, everyday spending globally.
How It Works: Bridging Fiat and Digital Currency for Spending
The service is built on an innovative payment infrastructure where the user's funds—whether traditional fiat currency or digital stablecoins—serve as the direct source for transactions. Specifically, the payment card will support:
- Five Fiat Currencies: US Dollar, Euro, Brazilian Real, Mexican Peso, Colombian Peso.
- Multiple Compliant Stablecoins: Including widely adopted options like USDC and OUSD, as well as others that align with emerging regulatory frameworks such as the GENIUS Act.
When a purchase is made, the system settles the transaction directly from the corresponding currency in the user's account. This bypasses traditional currency conversion entirely, saving users from foreign exchange fees and eliminating the multi-day settlement delays typical of cross-border transfers.
Current Traction and Strategic Vision
This is not a theoretical concept. The underlying multi-currency stablecoin card infrastructure is already live and processing transactions in over 30 countries. By 2026, monthly spending volume through this infrastructure is estimated to have reached approximately $1.2 billion, demonstrating strong market validation.
The expansion plan involves deep integration with Plasma's ecosystem. Plasma operates a blockchain network optimized for efficient stablecoin transactions and offers a neo-banking app called "Plasma One." The multi-currency account functionalities for Plasma users will migrate to Stripe's card payment infrastructure, creating a unified experience.
A strategic focus is evident in the selection of fiat currencies, with three of the five—the Brazilian Real, Mexican Peso, and Colombian Peso—targeting the Latin American market. This highlights the partners' focus on the digital payment and cross-border trade potential in emerging economies. By 2027, this initiative aims to establish a vast, efficient, and cost-effective payment network connecting consumers and merchants across the globe.
