Major Crypto Mining Crackdown: 187 Illegal Rigs Seized in Tehran Province

Electricity authorities in Iran's Tehran province have conducted a targeted enforcement operation, resulting in a significant seizure of unauthorized cryptocurrency mining hardware. According to reports from an official Iranian news agency, the raid took place at two separate industrial facilities.

Operation Scope and Seizure Details

A total of 187 mining machines were confiscated during the operation. The equipment was found operating covertly within industrial units, drawing substantial amounts of power around the clock to mine digital currencies. The local power distribution company emphasized the strain such activities place on the electrical grid.

Motivations Behind the Crackdown

Tehran Provincial Electricity Distribution Company has identified illegal mining as a priority for enforcement. The primary concerns driving these actions include:

  • Grid Stability Risks: Concentrated mining operations can cause sudden spikes in local electricity demand, potentially leading to voltage fluctuations and blackouts.
  • Misuse of Subsidized Energy: Iran offers heavily subsidized electricity rates. Illegal miners exploit this subsidy, resulting in significant financial losses for the state.
  • Disruption of Legal Industry: Unlicensed operations evade regulatory oversight and taxes, creating an unfair environment for lawful businesses.

This seizure is part of an ongoing campaign to deter such unauthorized activities.

Iran's Regulatory Stance on Crypto Mining

The Iranian government regulates cryptocurrency mining through a licensing system. Approved mining farms must obtain permits from relevant ministries and purchase electricity at export rates, which are considerably higher than subsidized domestic tariffs. Despite this, the potential profits continue to attract illegal setups.

In recent years, especially during peak winter demand and amid concerns over grid infrastructure, Iranian authorities have intensified inspections and penalties. The successful operation in Tehran's industrial zones is expected to serve as a warning to similar illegal operations in the region.
