Temasek’s 2027 Outlook: Navigating the AI and Inflation Crossroads

In a recent assessment of the global financial landscape, Rohit Sipahimalani, Chief Investment Officer of Singapore’s Temasek, highlighted two pivotal forces that could define market risks as we approach 2027.

The First Risk: A Sharp Turn in AI-Driven Markets

Sipahimalani pointed to the possibility of a reversal in the current exuberant trading around artificial intelligence. He described this as the “most significant risk,” though he doesn’t expect it to materialize imminently. The concern isn’t about the technology itself failing, but rather a market correction when excessive expectations meet reality.

The Second Risk: Persistent Inflation and Higher Rates

The other major threat stems from sticky inflation. Should price pressures prove enduring, central banks may be compelled to keep interest rates higher for longer. This scenario would trigger a chain reaction:

  • Further upward pressure on bond yields
  • Increased borrowing costs for corporations
  • A broad repricing of equity markets

These two risks are interconnected, as a high-rate environment could exacerbate valuation corrections in overextended sectors.

Temasek’s Strategic Pivot: Boosting AI Exposure and Liquidity

In response to this evolving risk-reward landscape, Temasek is actively repositioning its portfolio, which was valued at S$518 billion as of March 2026.

Significantly Raising AI Allocation

The firm plans to increase its exposure to artificial intelligence investments substantially. The goal is to grow the current allocation of around 6% to as much as 15% by 2031. This move signals a strong conviction in AI’s long-term potential, despite acknowledging possible near-term volatility.

Shifting Toward Public Market Liquidity

Alongside committing more capital to AI, Temasek is focusing on enhancing the liquidity of these investments. The strategy involves raising the proportion of AI holdings in public markets—like listed equities—from approximately 50% to between 70% and 75%.

This shift aims to create a more agile portfolio capable of responding swiftly to market shifts. It also underscores a growing emphasis on exit flexibility in an increasingly uncertain macroeconomic climate.

Temasek’s analysis serves as a crucial framework for investors. It balances the pursuit of transformative AI opportunities with a disciplined awareness of cyclical market forces and stubborn inflationary pressures.
