Tencent Launches TenPayGo, Bridging International Payment for Visitors in China

At a payment services event in Qianhai, Shenzhen, Tencent introduced TenPayGo, a new mobile payment application tailored specifically for international visitors to China. The launch represents a significant step in improving the payment experience for travelers within the country.

Direct Access to WeChat Pay's Merchant Network

The standout feature of TenPayGo is its direct integration with China's extensive WeChat Pay merchant ecosystem. International users can now make payments at millions of shops, restaurants, and venues that accept WeChat Pay, without needing to set up a local payment account.

This approach allows users to rely on familiar payment methods, significantly reducing the friction typically associated with cross-border transactions.

Support for a Wide Range of Global Payment Options

To accommodate diverse payment habits, Tencent has established broad compatibility from the outset.

  • Major Card Networks: Partnerships are in place with seven international card schemes, including UnionPay and Visa.
  • Diverse Wallet Integration: The app supports linking nearly 60 overseas digital wallets, with Apple Pay among them.
  • Flexible Payment Methods Whether it's card-present, contactless, or wallet-scan payments, users have multiple options.

Beyond Shopping: Integrated Public Transport Payment

Moving beyond retail, TenPayGo will also cater to daily mobility needs. Tencent revealed a collaboration with Shenzhen Tong to embed a transit card function within the app.

Once activated, international visitors can use TenPayGo to scan QR codes for rides on Shenzhen's metro and buses, eliminating the need for physical cards or cash. This service is scheduled to enter a beta testing phase in late September.

By addressing both commercial payments and public transport, TenPayGo outlines Tencent's vision of providing a seamless, end-to-end payment solution for short-term visitors, potentially giving a boost to China's inbound tourism and commercial appeal.
