xStocks Goes Global: Tokenized Stocks Set Sights on Hong Kong, UK, and South Korean Equities

The convergence of global finance and blockchain technology is accelerating. In a significant strategic move, xStocks, a leading tokenized securities platform operated by Payward, has announced plans to expand its reach beyond the United States. The platform is targeting major international equity markets, including Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, and South Korea.

A Phased Approach to Global Expansion

This expansion will be executed in stages, emphasizing partnerships with local service providers. xStocks has teamed up with investment infrastructure specialist GTN, with the initial focus on bringing a selection of Hong Kong-listed stocks onto its platform. This marks a crucial entry point into the Asian markets.

Following the Hong Kong rollout, the platform's roadmap indicates subsequent phases will target the UK and European markets, followed by South Korea. The final implementation in these regions, however, is contingent on receiving the necessary regulatory approvals from local authorities, reflecting the industry's focus on compliance.

Beyond Stocks: Laying the Groundwork for Future Assets

The partnership with GTN extends beyond just equities. Payward highlighted that this collaboration establishes a framework for integrating a broader range of tokenized asset classes in the future. Mark Greenberg, Global Services Lead at Payward, commented, "Equities from many global markets remain a significant and largely untapped asset class for tokenization. Our vision is to gradually bring the core assets of global capital markets on-chain through platforms like xStocks."

Existing Scale and Market Context

xStocks is building on a substantial existing base. Previously focused on U.S. stocks and ETFs, the platform offers on-chain versions of popular assets like Nvidia, Apple, and Tesla. Current platform metrics include:

  • Support for over 500 tokenized securities
  • Cumulative trading volume exceeding $35 billion
  • Nearly 200,000 asset holders

It's important to note that these products are currently not available to users within the United States.

A Heating Race and a Multi-Trillion Dollar Outlook

xStocks' expansion comes amid intensifying competition in the Real World Asset (RWA) tokenization space. Players ranging from retail brokers like Robinhood and crypto exchanges like Coinbase to traditional finance giants like Nasdaq and the NYSE are all exploring solutions to migrate traditional assets like stocks onto blockchain networks.

A previous report from Citi projected that the total market for tokenized securities could reach $5.5 trillion by 2030. Within that, tokenized equities are forecast to be a major segment, accounting for approximately $2.6 trillion. This immense potential is the driving force behind the rapid market entry. xStocks' global push is a strategic move to position itself in this emerging, high-stakes arena.
