Bridging Wall Street and Crypto: The EQX Protocol for Tokenized Equities
The frontier between traditional finance and decentralized protocols is becoming increasingly porous. EQX Labs has launched the EQX protocol, a new infrastructure designed to natively tokenize U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs on the Hyperliquid blockchain. This launch represents a significant step towards bringing regulated, institutional-grade assets into the realm of 24/7 decentralized trading.
Architecture: Security and Compliance at the Core
At the heart of the EQX protocol is a robust model of asset backing. Each token minted is fully collateralized 1:1 by real shares held with compliant custodians that are members of the Depository Trust Company (DTC). Named custodial partners include established firms like Alpaca, StoneX, and ClearStreet.
To protect token holders, the issuer, EQX SPC Ltd., employs a segregated trust structure. This legally isolates the underlying stock assets from the operational risks of the issuing entity, providing a familiar layer of security akin to traditional brokerage safeguards.
Trader Advantages: Lower Costs and Uninterrupted Access
For traders, the protocol introduces tangible benefits. A key advantage is its cost efficiency. The protocol itself charges no issuer fees, meaning users only pay Hyperliquid’s standard spot trading fees, significantly reducing the overhead of accessing U.S. equities.
Perhaps more transformative is the access model. Trading will not be bound by market hours. Via Hyperliquid’s public order book, the first 11 tokenized equity and ETF markets will be available for permissionless trading, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, opening global access.
Beyond Trading: On-Chain Shareholder Rights
The EQX protocol aims to tokenize not just price exposure, but full shareholder economic and governance rights.
- Voting: Token holders can exercise shareholder voting rights directly by submitting signed instructions from their crypto wallet.
- Dividends: Distributed dividends, after withholding taxes, are currently automatically reinvested. Future protocol upgrades are planned to enable direct dividend distributions to user accounts.
- Price Stability: A network of Authorized Participants can create and redeem tokens for the underlying shares. This arbitrage mechanism is designed to keep the token’s market price closely aligned with the net asset value of the backing stock.
The introduction of the EQX protocol moves beyond simple asset tokenization. By focusing on regulatory-grade custody, comprehensive rights conveyance, and enhanced trading utility, it seeks to build a functional and secure gateway between established equity markets and the decentralized future.
