A Watershed Moment for Mainstream Finance
Charles Schwab, the financial services behemoth overseeing more than $13 trillion in client assets, has officially rolled out cryptocurrency trading. Eligible retail investors among its tens of millions of active brokerage accounts can now directly purchase and sell Bitcoin and Ethereum through the Schwab platform.
Service Specifics and Future Roadmap
The initial offering supports deposits and withdrawals on the Bitcoin and Ethereum networks, with all withdrawal addresses requiring pre-registration for security. The platform charges a 0.75% transaction fee, with minimum and maximum trade amounts set at $1 and $2 million respectively.
CEO Rick Wurster indicated that crypto transfer capabilities are being introduced in phases. Looking ahead, the firm has outlined an expansion plan to add trading support for other major digital assets like Solana, Avalanche, and Chainlink by the end of 2026.
Strategic Implications and Market Impact
Wurster framed crypto trading as one of the firm's new transaction-based revenue streams. This move represents a significant expansion of Schwab's own product suite and is widely seen as a strong signal of accelerating digital asset adoption by established financial institutions.
Potential investors should note that the service is currently unavailable in New York, Louisiana, U.S. territories, and international markets. Users are advised to check their eligibility based on location.
