The Stalled Rating: Trump's ‘37% Ceiling’

A new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, conducted in mid-June, shows President Trump's approval rating holding steady at 37%, unchanged from the previous month. The survey, which interviewed approximately 3,040 U.S. adults between June 11 and 17, carries a margin of error of ±2.8 percentage points.

More notably, public approval of his handling of the Iran situation is similarly fixed at 34%. Together, these numbers paint a picture of stability, but not strength. Since U.S. military action against Iran began in February, the president's overall approval has fluctuated within a narrow band of 34% to 40%, failing to achieve any sustained breakout.

The Cracks Beneath the Deal

This polling data arrives as the U.S. and Iran announced a preliminary deal aimed at de-escalating hostilities. The diplomatic development triggered a drop in global oil prices, offering a short-term economic reprieve. However, these positive signals have not translated into additional political capital for the president.

The survey reveals a core contradiction: despite the thaw, public judgment of the recent military campaign remains largely critical. A significant 53% of Americans believe the U.S. military action in Iran "has gone too far." While this figure is 6 points lower than it was in March, the view that the response was excessive still represents a clear majority.

An Unconvinced Public

Analysts suggest the short-term economic benefits of the tentative ceasefire have not alleviated deeper public doubts. Many Americans continue to grapple with fundamental questions:

  • Were the original objectives of the military action clearly achieved?
  • Do the long-term policy outcomes align with national interests?
  • Have the risks of regional instability been adequately managed?

These unresolved issues continue to shape evaluations of the president's competence in foreign policy and economic stewardship. The Iran conflict and its ripple effects through global energy markets remain a key variable in assessing Trump's performance. The stability of the poll numbers indicates the public is watching the situation unfold with caution and skepticism, not easily swayed by short-term diplomatic announcements.
