The Proposed Change: Relocating the Island Structure
On current and planned Ford-class carriers, the island—the command and control superstructure—is situated aft on the starboard side of the flight deck. The new evaluation centers on moving it closer to the midsection of the ship. According to officials familiar with the matter, this reconsideration stems from the President’s stated dissatisfaction with the carrier’s appearance, preferring a profile that more closely resembles the classic lines of World War II-era carriers.
