The Steppe Powerhouse: Ulanqab's 12.5GW Data Center Ambition
While global tech giants outline 10GW data center plans, a city in northern China has quietly drafted a larger blueprint. Industry data reveals Ulanqab in Inner Mongolia has committed approximately 12.5GW of total data center capacity across operational, under-construction, and planned projects. This figure not only surpasses initial targets of certain international AI initiatives but signals a strategic shift in China's computing infrastructure landscape.
Hypergrowth: 70% Commitment in One Year
The expansion pace is particularly striking. Over 70% of Ulanqab's capacity commitments were added within the past twelve months. With only about 1.2GW currently operational, a pipeline of projects will gradually come online in the coming years.
This rapid clustering is deliberate. Multiple leading Chinese tech firms have established footprints:
- An AI company plans to build roughly 1GW of data center capacity
- A social media platform is reportedly considering a 600MW project
- Internet giants including ByteDance and Alibaba have already entered the market
The Dual Advantage: Cost and Connectivity
The business case for Ulanqab is clear. First, operational costs are compelling: land prices are significantly lower than in tier-one cities, abundant electricity resources keep power costs down, and the cold climate naturally reduces cooling energy consumption.
Critically, geography solves the latency challenge. Dedicated fiber optic links have reduced average network latency between Ulanqab and Beijing to under 5 milliseconds. This allows the region to leverage Inner Mongolia's energy and cost benefits while effectively serving demand from the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area.
This "near-Beijing, low-cost" model is redrawing China's data center map. As AI training demands continue to grow exponentially, hubs like Ulanqab that offer scale, affordability, and connectivity are seeing their strategic value rapidly reappraised.
