UniCredit Eyes Crypto Custody in European Banking Push
Italy's second-largest bank, UniCredit, is considering expanding into digital asset services, with cryptocurrency custody among the options under review. The Milan-based institution has begun evaluating technology providers to build infrastructure for holding and transacting digital assets.
Broader Digital Asset Vision Taking Shape
Beyond basic custody, the bank's exploration includes several innovative areas:
- Tokenized investment products and fixed-income securities
- Applications for stablecoin integration
- Structured products offering cryptocurrency exposure
This suggests a move toward comprehensive digital asset services rather than merely holding cryptocurrencies for clients.
European Banks Accelerate Crypto Adoption
UniCredit's considerations align with broader trends across European finance. Spanish bank BBVA now offers bitcoin trading and custody to all clients through its app, while Santander's Openbank has launched trading services. Germany's Deutsche Bank is developing custody solutions through a partnership with a fintech firm.
Regulatory Clarity and Collaborative Initiatives
The EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation provides legal definitions and familiar compliance frameworks, making it easier for traditional institutions to enter the space.
UniCredit is also part of a 37-bank consortium from 15 European countries forming Qivalis, a company focused on issuing a euro-denominated stablecoin. Last year, the bank offered structured products linked to a bitcoin ETF for professional clients, including full loss protection.
These parallel efforts reveal how established banks are approaching digital assets through multiple channels: independent technology development, industry collaborations, and adapted versions of existing financial products.
