U.S. Pumps $389 Million into Power Semiconductors, Targeting Fusion and AI

The U.S. Department of Commerce has unveiled a significant funding initiative, allocating up to $389 million from the $10 billion semiconductor fund approved by Congress in 2022. The funds will support four companies in advancing power semiconductor and critical material technologies, with the government receiving non-controlling minority stakes in return. This move signals a strategic push to bolster domestic capabilities in foundational technologies.

Funding Priorities: Three Cutting-Edge Fronts

The investment is strategically directed towards pivotal areas of future technology:

  • High-Voltage Semiconductors for Fusion Energy: The largest award, up to $175 million, is dedicated to developing high-voltage, high-reliability power devices for nuclear fusion power generation—a critical component for making commercial fusion energy a reality.
  • Efficient Power Solutions for AI Data Centers: Another substantial investment of $73 million will propel the development of vertical Gallium Nitride (GaN) power semiconductors tailored for AI data centers. These devices can dramatically improve energy efficiency, addressing the soaring power demands of expanding AI computing infrastructure.
  • Cornerstone Materials for Chipmaking: Funding of $56 million will support the advancement of ultra-high-purity quartz purification technology. Quartz is an essential consumable in semiconductor manufacturing, and its purity directly impacts chip yield and performance.

Strategic Goal: Accelerating Innovation and Securing Supply Chains

The Secretary of Commerce emphasized that the grants aim to “accelerate domestic semiconductor innovation and strengthen U.S. energy and power supply chains.” This is more than mere financial aid; it's a targeted industrial strategy. By supporting R&D across the entire value chain—from core materials like high-purity quartz to frontier applications like fusion and AI—the U.S. is seeking to build and maintain a technological edge and supply chain resilience in power semiconductors, a sector crucial for the future of energy and computing.

As the core components for power conversion and control, advancements in power semiconductors are vital for renewable energy grids, electric vehicles, industrial automation, and next-generation computing. This investment highlights a shift in the focus of semiconductor competition beyond traditional logic chips towards the broader and more foundational power and energy landscape.
