U.S. Treasury Unveils "Trump Account" Investment Structure: S&P 500 ETF as Default Core Holding

The U.S. Treasury Department announced the investment framework for the "Trump Account" on July 2. According to the release, all contributions made when the account launches will be automatically invested in the State Street SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF (SPYM). This fund, which tracks the S&P 500 index, is designated as the default investment option, providing broad-based market exposure as a foundational holding.

Four Alternative Index ETFs Identified for Future Selection

Beyond the default SPYM fund, the Treasury has preselected four low-cost index ETFs to be offered as alternative options to relevant parties in the coming months. The list of alternatives includes:

  • iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV)
  • Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI)
  • State Street SPDR Portfolio S&P 1500 Composite Stock Market ETF (SPTM)
  • iShares Core S&P Total U.S. Stock Market ETF (ITOT)

These funds provide varying levels of market coverage, from the S&P 500 core to the total U.S. stock market, offering a range of diversification options.

Upcoming Feature: Allocation Control Planned

The Treasury indicated that new functionality is expected to be introduced within the next few months. Once available, parents or guardians will gain the ability to allocate contributions among the different investment options. Until that feature is activated, all account contributions will continue to flow into the default SPDR S&P 500 ETF.

This structure balances simplicity at launch with future flexibility, reducing initial decision complexity through a default option while reserving room for customized portfolio management over time.
