USDC Circulation Soars: 300 Million Weekly Increase Pushes Total Past 74.6 Billion
Market data reveals a week of robust activity for the stablecoin USDC. Between issuance and redemptions, the network saw a net increase of approximately 300 million tokens, bringing its total circulating supply to 74.6 billion as of September 21st.
Issuance and Redemption: Net Growth Amid High Volume
This growth resulted from dynamic two-way movement. During the period, about 10.1 billion USDC was newly issued, while roughly 9.8 billion was redeemed. This high-volume churn culminated in a net inflow, indicating sustained demand for USDC even in a fluctuating market environment.
Behind the Tokens: A Deep Dive into the $74.8 Billion Reserve
Backing these 74.6 billion tokens is a reserve fund valued at approximately $74.8 billion. The composition of these assets is fundamental to USDC's stability and user trust.
Core Holdings: U.S. Treasuries Dominate
The vast majority of reserves are allocated to highly liquid, low-risk U.S. Treasury instruments.
- Overnight Reverse Repurchase Agreements: This category, worth about $41.2 billion, is the largest component. These are extremely short-term instruments (typically one day) offering supreme liquidity and safety.
- Short-Term U.S. Treasury Bills: Holdings of T-Bills with maturities under three months amount to roughly $26.5 billion. These are top-tier credit assets with minimal price volatility due to their short duration.
Combined, these two categories total about $67.7 billion, representing over 90% of the total reserve and forming the core anchor for USDC's peg.
Cash and Deposits: Ensuring Operational Liquidity
To facilitate daily instant redemptions, a portion of reserves is held as cash and deposits.
- Deposits at Systemically Important Institutions: Approximately $5.9 billion is held at banks designated as systemically important, which are subject to heightened regulatory oversight.
- Other Bank Deposits: About $1.2 billion is held at other partner commercial banks.
While lower-yielding, these assets provide the ready liquidity crucial for honoring the promise of 1:1 dollar convertibility at any time.
The reserve structure underscores a clear priority on safety and liquidity. By allocating the bulk of its assets to high-credit, short-term U.S. government obligations and maintaining necessary cash positions, USDC aims to preserve its value stability while retaining capacity to manage market demands.
