Ethereum Faces Block Building Centralization Risks

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently warned about potential centralization risks in the block building process, even as the network prepares for the 'Glamsterdam' upgrade.

He explained that while the 'Proposer-Builder Separation' (PBS) mechanism aims to enhance network efficiency, centralization of block builders could still lead to transaction censorship or harmful MEV practices like front-running and sandwich attacks.

Three Key Solutions from Buterin

Buterin outlined three innovative approaches to address these issues:

  • FOCIL Randomization Mechanism: Introduce random participants to control transaction inclusion and make censorship more difficult.
  • Encrypted Transaction Mempools: Prevent early exposure of transactions to protect users from front-running attacks.
  • Anonymous Routing System: Improve network layer privacy and prevent block builders from tracking user behavior.

Shifting Decentralization Focus

Buterin emphasized that as Ethereum scales, the focus of decentralization is shifting from validators to block building infrastructure.

He called for proactive measures to ensure long-term fairness and security, as the network continues its path toward mass adoption and scalability.
