A Deliberate Strategic Shift

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently shared a detailed personal vision for the future role of the Ethereum Foundation. He clarified these are his views alone, noting the board is collectively led, and his own influence will continue to diminish as the organization grows—a development he welcomes.

From "Center" to "Node": Redefining the Foundation's Role

Buterin argued the Foundation should not be seen as the ecosystem's "central manager," but rather as a "node with clear responsibilities," operating alongside many others. While this concept has been mentioned before, a lingering expectation for the Foundation to act as a central authority persists. Now, concrete steps are being taken to fully embrace this decentralized identity.

Limited Resources, Focused Mandate

This shift is driven by practical constraints: the Foundation operates with limited resources and organizational capacity. It holds only about 0.16% of the total ETH supply, significantly less than many large holders and starkly contrasting with the 10%-50% often held by foundations in other blockchain projects.

Consequently, the future strategy prioritizes "long-term survivability" over expansion. Remaining resources will be concentrated on areas critical to maintaining Ethereum as a censorship-resistant, credibly neutral, open, private, and secure system—tasks that might otherwise go unaddressed. This necessitates hard choices, meaning some respected projects and individuals may no longer be part of the Foundation's direct purview.

Empowering the Ecosystem to Safeguard Core Value

From a financial perspective, Buterin views the ETH asset itself as the blockchain's most valuable "product." With Ethereum securing roughly $250 billion in ETH value, the aforementioned system properties are vital for preserving this long-term worth.

He disclosed that the vast majority of his personal net worth is in ETH. The Foundation is exploring ways to collaborate with and provide initial support to other key ecosystem contributors—"heroes" who often hold more ETH than the Foundation itself. Certain essential work for upholding ETH's value falls outside the Foundation's sole remit.

The Future Vision: Smaller, More Stalwart, More Long-Term

In summary, the future Ethereum Foundation will be notably "smaller" in scale but more defined and steadfast in its positions, potentially even puzzling to outsiders at times. It will become more "long-termist," with its core mission laser-focused on ensuring ETH delivers meaningful, enduring value to the world.
