The Wall Street Playbook: A Game Where Most Arrive After the Profits Are Gone

During a fireside chat at Token2049 in Singapore, Jeff Yan, co-founder and CEO of Hyperliquid, delivered a critical assessment of traditional finance's wealth creation engine. He argued that the most lucrative phases of asset growth, particularly the exponential leaps seen before a company goes public, are systematically reserved for a privileged few—venture capitalists, institutional investors, and insiders.

Captured Growth: The Public Buys the Late Stage

"Think of an asset appreciating 5x or 10x while being tradable only within a very exclusive circle," Yan described. "By the time it lists on a public exchange like the NYSE and becomes available to retail investors, the most substantial gains have already been captured and realized by that inner circle." This structure, he contends, forces the majority of market participants to enter at a later, often riskier, and less rewarding stage of the asset's lifecycle.

For Yan, this isn't merely a question of fairness; it's a fundamental issue of sustainability. A system whose core reward mechanism perpetually favors a small minority ultimately erodes broader trust and participation.

The On-Chain Alternative: Democratizing Access from the Start

The solution, in Yan's view, lies in the architectural possibilities of blockchain and decentralized protocols. The core mission, he stresses, is to expand participation in the financial system itself. On-chain mechanisms can provide liquidity to assets at much earlier stages and configure access in more open ways, allowing a broader set of people to support and benefit from a project's early growth.

"Our revenue," he noted, "is essentially a byproduct of more people gaining access to on-chain wealth creation opportunities. It's validation of the demand for a more equitable model."

Market Validation: The Numbers Speak

Market data appears to support this thesis. According to analytics platform DefiLlama, Hyperliquid generated a staggering $72 million in protocol revenue over the last 30 days, ranking it as the third-highest revenue-generating protocol in the crypto ecosystem. This figure underscores significant user demand for its trading services, notably its perpetual futures contracts.

These perpetuals, which have no expiry date, offer distinct advantages: they reduce the operational burden on traders who would otherwise need to manage rolling positions, and they prevent liquidity fragmentation across multiple expiry dates, creating deeper, more efficient markets for all participants.

The success of such protocols points to a broader shift. As disillusionment with traditional finance's "walled garden" grows, the search for more open, transparent, and earlier-access avenues for wealth generation is becoming a defining pursuit for a new generation of investors globally.
