XRPL Technology Meets Banking Standards, But Adoption Hurdles Remain

In a recent industry podcast, former Ripple CBDC advisor Anthony Welfare shared his perspective on the current state and future potential of the XRP Ledger (XRPL). He confirmed that the distributed ledger is technically capable of supporting large financial institutions.

The Technical Foundation for Banking Services

Welfare highlighted several core capabilities that position XRPL for institutional use. The network can process cross-border payments with transaction confirmation in under three seconds, enabling near real-time settlement. It also supports asset tokenization, allowing digital payment instruments like dollar stablecoins to be issued and transferred. Additionally, it maintains a low-fee structure despite its high throughput.

“From a purely technical standpoint, there’s no fundamental reason this network can’t scale to meet the needs of banks, payment systems, and even governments,” he noted regarding XRPL’s technical readiness.

Technical Readiness Does Not Guarantee Market Adoption

Despite his technical confidence, Welfare expressed caution about actual market uptake. He clearly distinguished between “technical availability” and “commercial adoption.”

For financial institutions, speed is just one of many considerations when choosing infrastructure. They equally require:

  • Sufficient liquidity to facilitate large-volume transactions
  • Reliable asset backing
  • Professional custody services to meet security requirements
  • Comprehensive compliance frameworks adaptable across jurisdictions

Moreover, the market offers diverse alternatives. Different enterprises may opt for Ethereum, Arbitrum, or private chain solutions based on their specific needs, rather than relying on a single distributed ledger.

No Direct Link Between XRPL Usage and XRP Price

Welfare addressed a common misconception: increased usage of XRPL does not automatically translate to higher demand or price appreciation for the XRP token.

“How much value the token ultimately captures depends entirely on its actual role in payment flows,” he explained. If payment solutions primarily utilize other assets issued on the network (such as stablecoins), with XRP only serving as a transaction fee mechanism, its economic impact would be limited.

This distinction is crucial for investors understanding XRP’s value drivers. In blockchain ecosystems, network growth and native token value accumulation are often related yet separate processes.

Regarding market performance, XRP has recently traded around $1.31, following the broader crypto market correction. This price action appears to reinforce Welfare’s point—positive technical developments don’t always immediately reflect in token prices.
